The Department houses the local branch of the Indian Accounting Association as well as the Indian Commerce Association.
The Department of Commerce was established in 1985 as a Teaching and Research Department of the University of Kerala. Within a span of 37 years, we were able to establish ourselves as a Centre of Excellence with a focus on Education, Research, Consultancy, and Extension services. The Department has completed various milestones in its academic endeavor making it unique of its kind. The Department has completed 12 Major Research Projects with a funding of over 40 lakhs, three Consultancy projects for the industry with a funding of around 4 lakhs, three Collaborative Programmes and many International Conferences and Workshops as well as Lecture Series on topics of contemporary relevance .
The research eco-system of the Department is guided by a Researchers’ Forum, comprising of research guides and scholars. The forum publishes a Bi Annual Peer Reviewed ISSN journal named “Commerce and Business Researcher”. The editorial board of the journal consists of eminent professors and experts from India and abroad.
See ForumDepartment of Commerce has an Active registered Alumni Association which organises an annual merit day and has initiated Annual Merit Awards including C N Purushothaman Nair Endowment Award, Pradeep P Thevannoor Award and Prof. K Sasikumar Endowment Award for the Best outgoing Students from M Com programmes.
Alumini ActivitiesA very active student- centric Commerce Club Functions in the Department. All the PG students are Members of Commerce Club. The Club organises Budget Speeches, Panel Discussions and Career Support for Commerce Graduates across the State. . A flagship programme entitled My Career My Dream is a regular event.
See News & UpdatesThe Department has a vibrant Alumni Association which sponsors the Dr. Pradeep P Thevanoor Merit Award for the best outgoing student in M.Com Finance and Accounting. A Dynamic Commerce Club is yet another feature of the Department. The Department has its own placement cell.
The Alumni Association of the Department plays a crucial role in fostering a strong connection between former students and the institution. Alumni contribute to the department's growth and development by offering mentorship, networking opportunities, and career guidance to current students. Their support is instrumental in initiatives like the Dr. Pradeep P. Thevanoor Merit Award, which recognizes and rewards academic excellence.
Our extension services have been well taken by society, especially those related to career development- My Career My Dream is such a flagship program. Joint research projects and programs with institutes like Indian Institute of Information Technology Management and Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation are achievements of the Department.
These joint ventures not only enhance the Department's academic reputation but also contribute to the broader field by addressing relevant issues and exploring innovative solutions. Through these efforts, the Department continues to build meaningful partnerships and make a significant impact both within and beyond the academic community.

The M.Com in Rural Management, offered in collaboration with the Kerala University Study and Research Centre, Alappuzha, focuses on addressing the unique challenges and opportunities in rural development. Additionally, the M.Com in Blue Economy and Maritime Law explores the legal and economic aspects of marine resources and ocean governance, preparing students for careers in the burgeoning maritime sector. These programs reflect the Department's commitment to offering diverse and forward-thinking educational opportunities that align with contemporary industry demands and global trends.
